Angela Marshall of Appearance Management, an image consultant, has an eshopping service that gives ideas and suggestions to clients on where to shop to purchase items of clothes to suit your wardrobe personality.
Since November of last year several of Appearance Management’s clients have used the new eshopping service and the response has been so positive (see testimonials below) that I have decided to offer it to my newsletter contacts.
Why has eshopping been so successful?
Clothes’ shopping on the internet has grown hugely over the last few years, particularly amongst women between 25 -54, because
- Convenience to buy items when you want and at what time suits you; it can be done quickly and easily from your own home
- Saves time – no travelling , parking or walking from one shop to the other
- Broader range of products than is available in one shop and comparisons of items, either against each other or items in your wardrobe, is quicker and easier
- Items often only sold online
- Try on session in the safety of your own home
- Time to access whether you like the item or wish to return it
- Items are often much cheaper than in shops
Testimonials of the service:
Living in Scotland I can rarely meet up with Angela for a personal shopping trip. I had been rather unsuccessfully looking for an outfit to wear to a wedding when Angela mentioned that she could provide an internet service. It seemed an ideal solution to my shopping dilema. Internet shopping can be a tedious time-consuming activity but Angela is very knowledgeable and experienced and she found what was ideal for my colouring and personality and not an outfit I could ever have found myself. She also suggested accessories which set the dress off perfectly. I have been delighted with my internet shopping experience and would highly recommend the service. Sheila Houston
”Being very busy juggling a demanding career and young child, I have found it invaluable to be able to email Appearance Management to ask for ideas. It’s great to receive emails with links to relevant websites and specific items, which I can look at my convenience, rather than having to trawl through the internet myself, or spend lots of time in the shops.” Demelza Patricio
“Many thanks for your help eshopping; your comprehensive reply and excellent advice has helped tremendously! Julie Morgan

Whether you are going back to work after a break, looking for a job, starting a different job or starting your own business you need to feel confident with what you wear.
You may ask yourself what clothes have I got or what do I need to purchase? You need to ask yourself:
- What image do I wish to portray and what is the brand of the company I have or I work for?
- Has my wardrobe personality changed?
- Do I know what style, fabrics and accessories I enjoy to reflect my personality?
Then
- Check sort out and organise your wardrobe
- Make a list of the essential items you need for work
- Purchase only key items you need and gradually add more, especially if you are on a tight budget
- Buy a few of this season’s accessories to change and update your wardrobe
- Ensure you have comfortable shoes for work
- Have a good quality handbag, satchel or briefcase
- Always be well groomed – have shoe cleaning kit, sewing kit and organise your washing and ironing
What you need to ensure that you have an up to date image to suit you and the organisation. This doesn’t need to cost a lot, sort and organise your wardrobe and then make a list of the essentials you need.

Your Wardrobe
Do you know that studies have shown that most people wear 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time. Most women have too many clothes and say they have nothing to wear and most men still have in their wardrobe the jeans they wore in university or in their teens and think one day they will wear them. Really, and will you look the same? Do you still look like you did then, are you not older and more mature?
Most of us want to learn, change and develop during our lives and yet so many people do not learn what clothes they should have to suit their body shape, colouring and most importantly their personality or plan and buy items to reflect their lifestyle and budget. The result is people spend money on items of clothes they are not happy with and don’t wear. Purchase items that their friends or family persuade them to buy which reflect their wardrobe personality and not theirs.
Do you sort, organise and plan your wardrobe? Like any project it gives good results.
7 tips on Sorting Your Wardrobe
- Start 4 piles, one for the clothes you love (and go back in the wardrobe), one for ones to go out, one for items need mending and one for not sure and then ask:
- Has the item seen it better days, is it still wearable?
- Will I wear it again or does it not suit me or I don’t like it – wrong personality?
- Does it fit me? Is it too small, too big or wrong shape?
- Do I need it in my lifestyle – moved on, too young?
- Love it madly, need it badly or I get rid of it?
- Give items to charity , sell them on ebay or contact Shelter and donate items to those who need may be glad of them.
Your wardrobe should be an extension of your personality, read my book on wardrobe personality (“Being Truly You – Discovering Your Own unique Wardrobe Personality” ) by keeping in mind the following basic principles you can have the perfect wardrobe on a budget that reflects your style.
Does anything need to be altered to make it work? Can I add some accessories to give the right look? I help clients change items to a new look e.g. pin up hemlines to a more flattering length, change the shape of sleeves, add darts to create shaping – there are all sorts of alteration options available to increase the lifespan and wearability of a garment.

Your Personal Image is very important, but when canvassing as a politician it is vital. Your appearance, the way you sound and the way you behave sends messages to people about who you are.
Having the right wardrobe and grooming for any situation is essential to your image. At a first glance people will make a subconscious decision about you. It is up to you how you present yourself to the world. Non verbal communication indicates what you are like on the inside. Additionally, how you feel about yourself significantly affects the way you relate to others, and how others perceive you.
Improving your self-image, like improving any skill, takes time and practice. It is also like your journey in life: as you change so should your wardrobe. Always update and amend it to suit your lifestyle, age and personality.

When speaking at events, I regularly discuss the way we are all judged on how we look, sound and behave. How we dress gives out messages about us, and reflects on both our personality and our corporate brand. This leads people to judge our skills, our business and how professional we are.
The BBC is a national institution and the public rightly expect the presenters to represent their company in a professional way. The more relaxed and casual approach the BBC presenters have adopted over the last few years has not been welcomed, according to the Daily Mail today – The BBC scruffs, Bring back ties, says viewers fed up with the casual look.
Viewers aren’t impressed with the casual dress: 63% – believe male presenters of current affairs programmes should wear ties. 48% don’t want to see TV presenters in jeans and only 6% think it is acceptable on a news or current affairs show.
Sky News presenters now regularly out-class their BBC counterparts: all Sky News presenters, both male and female, wear jackets and well-tailored clothes; now the exception rather than the rule at the BBC. On top of that, the BBC’s female breakfast TV presenters often wear colours that fail to complement their natural colouring, making them look pale and tired – a simple thing to get right with good advice.
The BBC needs to consider using image consultants (such as Appearance Management) to ensure their presenters look smart, conservative and professional, reflecting the heritage of the BBC corporate brand, and the expectations of the their customers – the license-payer.
Whatever we do and whoever we see it is important not to let ourselves down and to be professional at all times. Looking good, being polite and having good communicating skills whether in our business or private life can go a long way.
Looking and feeling good affects how you behave. Look like a slob and you are more likely to behave like one. Look the part, think the part and you will be the part. Now, more than ever people need to be professional in their work and in their home life. Lead my example to your children.
Professional Etiquette
Having good manners is about presenting yourself with the kind of style that shows you can be taken seriously. When you are confident you feel comfortable and behave well to people around you and they in turn feel comfortable around you. Good professional Manners pay off.

Hello everyone

Angela Marshall
I founded Appearance Management in 1995 and I’m one of the UK’s leading image consultants. I made a unique contribution to our understanding of image by identifying ten distinct Wardrobe Personalities ranging from casual to dramatic to creative.
I’ve been told that my enduring success in a sector where people rapidly ‘come and go’ is due to my ability to skilfully and sensitively help people to Truly Be themselves. It’s true, I do get a buzz out of helping people look good and to feel really great about themselves. “You can tell when it’s right - their confidence increases and straight away their body language changes – they become a different person”.
My previous career in banking places me in an invaluable position to advise other corporate businesses. My client list includes senior executives, blue chip companies, politicians, career professionals and people returning to work after a break. Unusually for an image consultant I advise almost as many men as women.
I also work with media training companies and have appeared on Sky News, Radio 5 Live and a number of local stations as well as providing comments on image for the press. I’m a member of the Professional Speakers Association and am available to present at conferences, sales events, corporate meetings and seminars.
